a demo is a big risk for people that don't know what they're doing but for people that know that they have a good quality game this is the best option I love when people come together and they create a piece of art just like this that's why we spend money on games because we want to see it just like we see it on outriders
Demos CAN be bad but obviously only for the developer. If Outriders wasn't a blast to play it would of gotten shit on but the developer felt confident enough to release a demo knowing the gameplay was on point. Releasing a demo is a win win for the consumer unless it's something like Anthem where nothing was ever fixed in the demo or even after launch. People Can Fly did everything right with this demo and developers should take note
This demo was awesome.
all I can said is that this guys from people can fly are the most professional dev team be far, that I know in my 20 years as a gamer
its been in the top 10 sells on steam SINCE the demo was out
I take it MASSIVE was behind ths research? lol Real question, what is the cost to the publisher (money, time/manpower), demo vs trailers and PR.
You can't really tell how a game really feels from youtube content alone. I was very skeptical of this game and didn't like how it looked at first glance from what I saw on youtube but my brother convinced me to try the demo….and wow. I was hooked ever since. After playing the demo I have pre ordered and have been on the hype train ever since.
PCF did an amazing job during the demo though, they actually used it as a beta test. They listened to all the community feedback, and even made patches to the demo. They kept an open line of communication to the player base and were quick to respond to question or in game issues. This isn’t something you see in the industry anymore. They are truly trying to release the best game possible for the community BEFORE it launches not after. It’s rare and I appreciate the hard work they doing for us. Oh did I mention it’s not a live service, no micro transactions… found me a unicorn.
Im preloaded on xbox.I was sold with the demo.PCF have nailed it.Refreshing and new atleast for me.Division 2 has burned me out. This is right way to do a game.I didnt use xbox game pass because i wanted my money to support the team.Thou im sure they will be okay, lol.April 1 come on baby.
This gonna be easy popular for twitch as well because it's easy to understand mechanic and also unlimited customization with skills that offers so much eye candy. I have a feeling this game gonna be big too.
I think the reason they say that demos are a bad idea is because if it’s a shitty game, people will see that in the demo and it will lower preorders. For instance, look at anthem. The demo was hot garbage, and so was the main game when it released. However, if you can make a good game, and release a good demo to go with it, then it can be a great way to bolster preorders and community opinion on a game.
Best demo by far in awhile.. you can tell they actually wanted to showcase their game
the game was lame. gunshots had no umph. story/dialog was bland. interaction with npc is dry as fuck. reminds me of anthem. destiny already did alot of what this game is trying to do and it did it better. the mob AI is dumb, they dont cover n shoot when getting lit up. the visuals and camera are terrible if u consider we are in 2021. anthem, div 2 and destiny looks way better than this game. this game just doesnt click for me and i still dont see what it is everyone likes about it other than its new. i feel like its all hype.
You started off great with your logic that correlation isn't always cause.
But then you went on to a hasty generalisation using one successful example to be representative of all.
Obviously whoever made that article about Demos not being profitable obviously don’t know shit. You gotta give people a slice of the game that way they know if they want to Get it or not. So many times I have bought a game thinking it would be great but it turned out to be absolute rubbish. Having a demo the consumer will know what we are getting. If you ask me all games should have a demo option that way we can try before we buy. We can take a car for a test drive before we buy it why can’t we do it with a video game
lol you are bashing on an article from 2008, how do you expect them to predict the future of game demo effectiveness in 2021 like that?
This video seems to go out of its way to prove exactly the opposite of what the title suggests. That article referenced did not say demos weren’t profitable or useful it suggested they were not the most effective way to market your game. That article was based solely on a perspective of sales, not consumers being satisfied with their purchase.
So in that regard it is true that demos are not the most effective marketing tool. Look at cyberpunk, if they had a demo of that game prior to release that was an actual representation of the game as it was they would have no doubt lost early sales. They did however have great marketing trailers and we can see the clear results of a half baked game selling 13 million units in a few days thanks to that.
So yeah, the argument was never demos are not useful just not the most useful and I agree. Now I’m a gamer I obviously want the demo but from a publisher standpoint trailers allow you better control over the message. I still remember seeing the trailer for Jeepers Creepers and thinking that was going to be a great movie.
What they doing definitely set the groundwork for better gaming future I refused to get Hoodwinked again from over the top trailers and in-house gameplay
Remember the CD demos that came with Playstation Magazine, Electronics Gaming Monthly. Game Informer, Game Pro? Ahh yes.
By the way demos ARE profitable. By releasing the demo they are skipping over having to send review copies to leftist media companies like Gamespot, IGN etc. So basically instead of having some San Fran hipster give a bad review on a game no one can get their hands on they gave the people the game to decide whether it's good or not instead of leaving it up to the opinion of those hipster reviewers. They made a smart move, because why put the success of ur game into the hands or these people?
I pre-order it after trying the demo! Maybe 2nd game of the year 2021
Publishers full of talking heads and jargon slingers. They're bullshit on many levels. let more learn from observing the success of others and change their ways accordingly
Since the CDPR Cyberpunk 2077 trailer and how that game was, I'm sorry industry who make games , Trailers , I dont believe them anymore, or trust them.
The only time a demo isn’t a good idea is when the game sucks. Outriders is so awesome so far that I guarantee that this demo was a profitable decision!
Outriders is definitely a good case study for how demos actually benefits games. I've heard of Outriders before last year, but seeing as it was yet another looter shooter it didn't interest me that much, and looking at a lot of people it's clear that was the general sentiment. It's only when the demo came out and I started playing it out of curiosity that I realized I liked this game, enough for me to buy it, and again that seems to be the sentiment going in for a lot of people.
The study does make a point that demos are good at creating word-of-mouth, but the study made it sound as though word-of-mouth only was undesirable. It really failed to foresee that word-of-mouth will become a significant force in the future of online marketing due to the rise of social media.
Also, demos have always been around, it's just that the major western AAA devs have abandoned it. However, many other studios still offer demos, for example Capcom and their demos for the Remakes of RE2 and RE3, and recently the Monster Hunter Rise demos, all of which have been bestsellers.

Square Enix bout to make their money back
People can fly are the epitemy of reactive game devs community friendly game devs. Compared to Bungie with destinys beta 6 years ago, they are wiping the floor with Bungie when it comes to transparency , consumer friendly , being reactive and listening to the community. I doubt it , but i hope other devs will learn from people can flys transparent approach. Because of what i have mentioned i have so much goodwill for them. This is the looter that in my opinion has the most fun and exiting combat loop. The game has flaws by all means , but to me those flaws are not fundementally game braking. Cant wait to binge on this game during my easter break:))).
a demo is a bad idea…IF YOUR GAME IS TRASH, but if your game is decent or awesome it boosts the hype and sales
Turns out people like to know what there buying and if you give me a test drive of an awesome car I'm likely to see and feel why its worth my money. Only developers making poor products are scared of demos.
Fair point but also outriders has next to no competition on steam right now. If it wasn't no1 I'd be very worried…
I think you can't just narrow it down to that demo.
People Can Fly is very open to us. They tell us what they're panning to do and what not.
Yes, the demo is a huge plus, but not just because the demo is there.
PCF actually patched the demo a couple of times instead of saying, "Fuck it, we'll fix it later."
Outriders is also not a games-as-a-service product, which is huge for many of us.
After Anthem, Fallout76, the whole Ubisoft and EA money-grab machine etc. – we don't want crap like that anymore.
It's refreshing to get a finished game this size at its release.
When DEMO make no profit become the new standard, it is just sad how low standard has been………
These Researchers are trying to stop what they see coming. The fact that people will start to demand Demos from future games.
Pretty happy they had a demo, totally turned me off the game. I hope the game dies well, the devs have done a great job on this game it's just not for me. Hope everyone enjoys outriders
