I think the extra sorts of shards are from dismantling legendaries. On the Legendaries there are 3 possible extras like 1. Crit damage, 2. Skills life leech and 3. Close range damage. And one of those is random selected with a shard next to it (right side). And once you selected the gun/gear and dismantle that item, you will get that specific new option in the shards menu. I checked the legendaries I got so far and they have other extras on it for exemple: 1. The Migraine has 'close range damage'
2. Grim Marrow has 'skills life leech' and also the 'close range damage'
3. The Iceberg has 'Status power' and 'long range damage'
4. Amber Vault: 'Healing received' and 'close range damage'
5. Voodoo Matchmaker: 'healing received' and 'close range damage'
6. Rarog's Gaze: 'status power' and 'long range damage'
7. Golem's Limb: 'skills life leech' and 'close range damage'
8. Torment & Agony: 'status power' and 'close range damage'.
I just dismantled the 2 legendaries duplicates I have with a shard sign next to an extra I haven't unlocked yet and now have a total of 8 possible shard options. So it's really the shard next to the text which will give you the shards and unlocks new ones. The only thing I don't know yet is that if you unlock a new shard option, will you be able to get the new shard option on new blues drops for example. I will collect some and tell you if I find one.
Is it possible your stash was full and a Lego was auto dismantled that you didnt see?
I have the same issue but mine is close range damage and i got it from a dup legendary that accidentally got dismantled bc my inventory was full.
Echoing anyone who suggested it's from dismantling legos. I want to say it was on reddit, some cheater noticed when breaking down their "extras", lol. Not that that's proof, guess it could be some very rare blue drops or something.

Just to further explain, I have had 17 legendary drops, 12 of them are dupes and ALL 12 are on my Trickster, I have dismantled all 12 on my trickster and have NOT received any "new" shards. On my devastator I only have had 4 legendary drops with 0 dupes, I haven't dismantled a single one on there, my inventory is NEVER full because I delete things after every single run of a farm (habit from when I was recording 100x kills of a captain) There is no way in the slightest that my Devastator has dismantled a legendary / accidentally dismantled. I figured they would probably be from legendary stuff but because I HAVE NOT dismantled anything on my devastator, I didn't make that connection as it wouldn't make any logical sense because I HAVEN'T DISMANTLED ANYTHING ON MY DEVASTATOR. lol 🙂
