Outriders Made No Profit

The gaming news that Outriders made no profit is not surprising to some of us. With the upcoming update of Outriders Worldslayer many are probably curious about the future of the game. Many, myself included, would blame launching on XBOX Game Pass during their launch week.

Even with Outriders DLC around the corner, the real question is how long can the game last after not turning a profit. In my experience Outriders gameplay has a lot of promise if they fix the content loop and sound design.

  1. I am of the opinion that Outriders was way more broken than Cyberpunk at launch.
That damn login bug stopped me from playing the game more than any bug in cyberpunk.

    How about this advice:

    Don't launch broken

  2. You have to assume that whatever deal PCF set up was worth the loss of sales.

If that isn't the case, that's not a condemnation of gamepass in general.
That just means you set up a better deal next time.

  3. What about the countless statements and articles stating how good gamepass is for developers. One bad game that no one wanted to play doesn’t hinder the countless games thriving that are on gamepass. MLB the show as one example

  4. Cancelling there pre order and playing on gamepass isn’t going to play for free. Or taking support away from the developer. Playing on gamepass takes a subscription fee; not free to play. As well as supports the developers with your subscription fee. I don’t like hearing that playing on gamepass is getting to play it free or not supporting developers.
Stranger things isn’t free. It comes from paying for the Netflix subscription fee.

  5. Don’t agree with the strategy part, the money they got from Xbox to put it on gamepass originally was probably better than what they would have made with a broken launch of a game.

  6. The people in these comments are so bent on protecting Gamepass, they are not even listing to what Lono is saying. Can't wait for him to be proven right, because he is. I do think all games should have a trial that shouldn't be behind a pay wall.

  7. Honestly, this conversation hinges on something that I dont think we know: how much Microsoft pays companies for being on Game Pass, and if Game Pass apes things like Spotify (where they pay some small percentage per listen).

If Microsoft pays MORE than you would make through purchases, then thats a good deal (tho this is a tricky one considering lifetime sales can be important). If they pay LESS, you are probably hoping that your secondary monetization will be where you make your money, or youre just hoping that being on Game Pass will net you more attention than releasing on your own might have garnered – but on either case youre hoping youre benefitting from additional exposure.

Considering that Outriders is available on several platforms and didnt meet profittability (and as you say, the devs are not confident it EVER will) I actually cant draw the conclusion that the Game Pass move might have been substantially bad for it. To draw that conclusion, Id have to imagine that Outriders would have made substantially more money on purchases than Microsoft paid them to be on Game Pass – but looking at the other platformers it doesnt APPEAR that they would have made enough money on purchases in the first place. It might be likely that Microsoft probably paid them a near-equivelant amount of money, which would make Game Passes impact negligible.

I think we'd need to know that number to draw a strong conclusion – and as one of your chat said, if they CONTINUE to offer Outrider things on Game Pass, it must suggest that its not deemed a poor business decision to do so (if we are assuming the parties involved are competent)

Thats what seems to be the case to me. Square did just sell several studios to invest in an immediately dead market so maybe its possible they are just making horrible business decisions as well
