Outriders has begun to look like a Looter Shooters that actually LEARNED from previous examples. The loot system looks good, the customization has potential and the game is overall becoming something that has me excited to jump in and grind.

My impressions so far are that Outriders (from Square Enix) will be a game worth checking out, based on the rare demo offering that the company has decided to allow.

  1. I guess im starting to become a fanboy of the game , but im not blind to it's flaws. The good: the combat loop is fun and exiting. The rpg mechanics and loot progression looks stellar and deep. Great enemy variety not just 4 races reskinned like in Bungos game. The story while it's not gonna win an Oscar still has me actually interested in getting into and reading the lore. The cons: the game lacks that triple a polish, animations are a little janky etc. Thats my impressions. Overall to me the strengths of the game heavily outweigh the cons. Also you gotta love these devs, they are on top of things all the way. In difference to bungo. Looking very much forward to grinding hard for for loot:).

  2. I love looter shooters, but the Demo was so awful that my hype dropped hard. Tried to play with friends and for 2 hours we tried everything, but someone always getting kicked out due to disconnects, and it's random. No matter who opens the room and invites. It was so frustrating that I don't think a Demo, that is supposed to reflect the real version but limited, will convince me of Outriders being worth the money.

  3. This is super promising, but releasing a week after Monster Hunter Rise is terrible timing. Not sure how much the audiences overlap, but every pve-coop fan with a Switch will be all over Monster Hunter for the near future.

  4. Glad I'm not the only one that refers to it as a "compliment sandwich" lol.

Excited for Outriders and it's nice to have a looter shooter that is up front with what is to be expected.

  5. Yeah, I maxed out all the characters in a week and then kept playing to increase my power level point by point.
The side mission when you kill the captain kept me engaged for hours on end.

The thing after launch was that after completing a secondary mission again you wouldn't get notified what you got as a reward, neither did you get an option to choose a reward. Some random piece of gear got randomly dropped into your inventory giving really unpredictabe results.

Also as much as I agree with Devastator's avalanche ability being strong you seem to not be playing Trickster to his full potential either – I recommend going double shotgun build and just rushing everyone, because his bubble is just so OP compared to every other skill in the game.

Also regarding skill strength – don't be fooled. Don't know how much Warframe you've played, but extreme late game there proves, that it's not about damage skills, unless they get really extreme (like Mesa's ult back in the day) and/or are scalling up with your gun power directly. It's about CC abilities and Gun damage. I'd fully expect any damage ability to drop off at late game and at expeditions, and CC builds being the norm.

But that's just one man's take on the subject.

  6. My favorite experience with the demo is, that you can make every class a tank+DPS+Healer. Just get a sidearm (preferably pistol cause it has 34 bullets) with life leech attribute and Shield Maiden trait. Shield Maiden puts a shield on you with every shot. Also sidearms have infinite ammo, so you will never be out. Then you can just facetank everything in the demo. Probably not gonna work later on, but it is really helpful while leveling.

  7. I loved the demo and spent almost 50 hours with it playing with friends. I don't understand when I see some people's videos be like….outriders is the worst game I have ever played and will be dead on arrival….

  8. Looter shooter format is trash and there is no way around that fact due to the over-abundance of all items and repetition with nonexistent reward (more of the same gear, levelled up). However, the kinds of weapons and their feel, melee animations, power animations (as in this game), character customization, and the environment detail can make a pretty good game along with a story. I hope this game is worth laying for more than a week or two b/c Destinyand Borderlands proved that looter shooters were horribly repetitive and unredeemable in less than one week or 2-3 days of gameplay. Gear acquisition and boss battles… such a nauseating and disincentive to play this category of game.

  9. The game is not supposed to be a "Live Service". So I think the fact that they don't try to stretch gear progression out, to artificially inflate playtime so they can present "more content", accidentally may have caused better game design…

  10. This is a nitpick, but you claimed at the beginning that The Division is the original looter shooter, but it came out whole 7 years after Borderlands and 4 years after Borderlands 2.

  11. They really seem to be invested and love their product. They’re updated the demo I think three times already. Which is crazy. But it’s great to see the kind of care they have for the game and any future content!

  12. Mass Effect Andromeda was not as big of a letdown for as I've heard other players lament. I did quite enjoy most of it even though I still haven't finished, but the "find space, build colony" aspect of it seemed very poor, considering that's the sole goal of the Andromeda Initiative to begin with. On the other hand, I play ME games for exploration, meeting people and shooting said people if I don't like their face, and Andromeda still holds true to those aspects.

Then I play this demo and I gotta say, I was pretty eager to explore more about this crazy new world they'd discovered – until it all went to hell. Personally, what I find myself doing in the world I find myself in most of the demo, neither is what I expected nor really want to play. I love post-apocalypse, dystopian settings like Metro, Fallout and the original Rage but I was very excited initially because I thought Outriders would have a go at what Andromeda tried to do, even if the control play is, shall we say, scaled down a little. I'll likely end up picking this up eventually because it did intrigue me, I'd just prefer to find out about this from the start and not be thrust into everything by way of exposition from an old crewmate.

All this said, I am really appreciative of the devs to actually release an actual demo, especially considering the times, like you point out. The last proper demo I recall playing is Immortals Fenyx Rising, which I absolutely adore. though I'm sure there have been several after that point. I don't know how/if demos differ from making the main game in any way or if there's anything that could hinder the devs from "cutting off" a portion of the game to serve it up as a demo, but I think it should be something most, if not all devs should do to give potential buyers a fair chance to make an informed decision, because there's only so much a Youtube video can do – which is often "nothing" if the game hasn't released yet.
