Outriders didn’t break even in 2021 but Final Fantasy XVI nearly done

Square Enix is back in the news this week as a new earnings report from People Can Fly reveals that Outriders did not recoup development costs by the end of 2021. Some good news for Square Enix fans though – Final Fantasy XVI is nearly done with a new trailer on the way.

  1. So, if the math is right and Outriders beat sales and install expectations (at least initially) AND they were likely compensated by Microsoft for putting it on gamepass, but PCF didn't make enough to compensate Square, so… how fucking much did it cost to make? The game was not particularly compelling, so maybe it was missing the long tail of purchases they had hoped for/forecasted off initial sales? There was a LOT of marketing for the game, so maybe the promotional budget was way out of proportion? Something doesn't quite add up.

  2. Honestly (selfishly) I’m just hoping that we get FFVII Remake pt.2 sooner than we originally would of because they decide to focus on “money makers”
(Assuming FFVII actually made enough money to be considered a success in their eyes)

  3. Oh good. The next Fake Gritty Grimgrim Juvenile Fantasy XOX is coming out. Which character will you fall in love with? Grim Scowly Unkempt Emo Moron 1 2 or 3?

  4. Outsiders was probably one of the worst launches I've experienced and post launch patches were absolute dogshit and I hope they never make another game.

  5. I actually genuinely hated outriders at launch and regretted that I paid $60 for the garbage I got. Recently thought about playing a looter shooter and heard that outsiders had been updated a bit, so I decided to download it after a whole year of not playing it again, and I have to say, I absolutely can't put it down. Whatever they did has struck a chord with me because it's so much better than I had originally thought at launch. Do I plan to buy the expansion? Still on the fence about it, but I'm enjoying the core gameplay loop as it stands.

  6. Naoki Yoshida has brought about a creative renaissance and juicy source of revenue to Square Enix with FF14 alone, and I think we're about to see some wild stuff from them.

"Oh no, we won't get another crappy Deus Ex, or mildly above average Tomb Raider that no one bought."

I think this is money that's going towards some real good projects, with newly motivated talent.

  7. SE is effin wild with their sales predictions/expectations and I really don't get whats going on. Either its an old guard who isn't keeping up with times or some massive, MASSIVE discrepancy with east vs. west expectations. Also their statements are all over the place. "Outriders performed better than expected" but several months later "yeah it didn't do that good" Like who the heck is running that side of things.

  9. Fuck Outriders. I regret trying to support People Can Fly by buying the game even though the demo was buggy and the game was on Game Pass AT LAUNCH. The thing that angers me the most about Outriders is that PCF kept releasing bad patches that broke the game further, treating their fanbase like free QA testers despite (some of) us having paid money for the game. It was a slap in the face, after already being slapped in the face with their always-online bullshit and how the first 3 days were literally unplayable because the servers were down.

People, in fact, cannot fly. They can barely crawl…

  10. Outriders is an excellent game the suffered a rushed launch and still some of the bugs and optimization issues never got fixed. One of the most compelling looter shooters in terms of pure gameplay, abilities where awesome the augments system needs to be in other games in the genre (although i still think there was more you can do with it). late game is probably the only abject flaw with the game cause it really needed more post launch content and DLC

  11. I have high expectations for FF16 because its directed by the man himself Yoshi-P. Much better sense of story direction than Tetsuya Nomura but i was hoping Tetsuya was gonna be in charge of combat design, ive yet to hate the combat of games where he is involved.

  12. I have a PS4 for almost three years. I've played my share of games, mostly single player but a couple multiplayer for the campaign ( Destiny 2, SW Battlefront etc). Outriders is by far the worst game I've played. Full of glitches (I played it three months ago, not at launch), builds that are not viable, boring enemies after a few battles in. I'm not the "WORST GAME EVER" guy. I always try to find something positive and if the gaming expericence is good I don't mind a few glitches here and there ( hello, Cyberpunk), but this… This was bad…

  13. I wonder how much money got lost for Outriders, trough people wanting their money back after their accounts got deleted and not restored for multiple months. They really struggled on that bug.

  14. I feel like squareenix is tetering on the knife's edge atm. Didn't they sell off a bunch of IPs including tomb Raider in order to focus on blockchain related services?

They keep making stupid decisions because of shortsighted greed. Look what they did to mankind divided. Perfectly good game that was designed without mtx in mind. But they forced it in at the last second during development, and had that ridiculous founder package bullshit. At this point, I'm not certain that FF16 will even be good. Or that it will save the company even if it is good.

The only thing propping them up is FF14. But if they infect FF14 with NFTs, they're done. And it seems very likely that they'll be pulling something like that in the near future.
